Lord of the Rings

Starting a new game.

The game expects you to be playing on a single sided table. When you host a game of Lord of the Rings, please ensure that in the Pre-Game Lobby, the “One Sided Table” option is enabled.
The table will show the staging area at the top of the screen along with space for the active location and quest card(s).
The game can be played with 1 to 4 players.

Game Setup
Once the game is started you will need to load your player deck (containing your Heroes and player cards). One of the players will also need to load the Encounter deck.
Cards from the Encounter deck are loaded into the Global tab, cards from Player decks are loaded into the player’s tab. If a player other than the host wants to control the encounter deck during play then they will need to right click on the piles in the Global tab and take control of them.
Unless you have turned off automation, when you load a deck the game will automate player and encounter deck setup. If you have turned automation off you can activate this function manually using the “Player Setup …” option from the table menu (Right click anywhere on the table to bring up the menu) or by using the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut. This will

  • Put your heroes onto the table
  • Calculate your starting threat
  • Draw 6 cards

If you have also loaded the Encounter Deck it will

  • Put the first quest card into play
  • Put all the cards you need for setup either onto the table or into the staging area depending on the quest card setup instructions
  • Shuffle the Encounter Deck

The players can choose to Mulligan at this point (Ctrl+M).
Read through the setup instruction on the quest card carefully. All the cards you need for setup will be on the table. Some may have been moved into the staging area or the active location area. If the setup differs according to the number of players in the game you will need to move the appropriate number of cards into the correct areas. Some quests may require you to return some of the cards to the Encounter Deck. If you do this then remember to reshuffle the Encounter Deck before starting to play.
The first person to setup will become the first player in the game, the second player to setup will become the second player to play, etc.

The game can be played in one of 3 modes depending on how much automation you prefer. This setting affects all players and can be adjusted in the table->automation menu.
Phase Management – Each phase of the turn is tracked as well as the first player and turn count. Players use ctrl+Right Arrow when they are “Done” in each phase.
Turn Management – Each turn is tracked (but not the phase) as is the first player and turn count. Players use ctrl+N to move onto the next turn. This is the default mode.
No Management – The game doesn’t track turns. Players can still use ctrl+N to add resources to heroes and draw a card at the start of the turn. Players manage the first player and turn count manually using the Green play buttons built into OCTGN.

You can bring up an automation “Help” card (Table->Automation->Help – Automation Modes) to remind you of the different modes and the short cuts.
You can bring up a turn sequence “Help” card (Table->Automation->Help – Turn Sequence) to remind you of the full turn sequence.
If you are using Phase Management you might want to create a personal “Done” Button. Double clicking this is the same as using the ctrl+Right Arrow shortcut. This can also be used in the other game modes, instead of advancing the game phase it will send a “<username> done” message to the chat window to let the other players know you are ready.

When you are ready to start the first turn use the “Done” option (if phase management is enabled) or the “New Round” option if not, to add 1 resource to each of your heroes and draw a card. When all players have indicated they are ready, the first player token will be put under the first player’s Hero (in a multiplayer game) and you are ready to begin.
Quest cards are double sided. To reveal the next quest card (1B) either double click it or flip it over (ctrl+F). To reveal the next quest card, delete the current one (Del) or use ctrl+Q if you prefer to keep the previous quest card on the table. Note double clicking on side B of a quest card adds a progress token, once enough progress tokens have been added to complete the stage, double clicking again will discard it and reveal the next stage.

Playing the game
To play a card you can double click it to move it to the table, or you can drag it manually.
To reveal a new encounter card use Ctrl+E, this will place the top card of the encounter deck into the staging area. If the encounter deck is empty it will reshuffle the discard pile first.
During combat use Ctrl+S to add a shadow card to an enemy. Pressing Ctrl+S while the mouse is over a shadow card will flip it over.

At the end of the round use Ctrl+R to refresh all your characters and increase your threat by 1. If you forget to do this, it will automatically happen when you start the next round using ctrl+N. In a multiplayer game, when a player uses Ctrl+N, his Hero cards will be highlighted in grey. This indicates that that player is done and ready to move onto the next round). Once all players have used Ctrl+N, the game will automate the next round and all the grey highlights will be removed.
If a player uses Ctrl+R in a multiplayer game, it will NOT immediately refresh your cards. Instead, your hero cards will be highlighted in orange to indicate to everyone that you are ready for the Refresh Phase. Simply wait for the rest of the players to use Ctrl+R or Ctrl+N themselves. (Note: it is perfectly fine for some players to use Ctrl+R and others to use Ctrl+N.) Once every player has used one of the commands, everyone’s cards will refresh and the 1st Player Token will be passed. Players who previously used Ctrl+N will still have a grey highlight at this time since they’ve already told the game that they are ready for the next round — they do not need to hit Ctrl+N a second time. Once you’ve taken any refresh actions and dealt with any end of round effects, anyone who is not highlighted in grey can now use Ctrl+N, and the next round will begin!
Some quests require a second Encounter Deck (The Battle of Lake-Town for Smaug, Over the Misty Mountains Grim, Foundations of Stone). These cards are loaded into the “Special” Deck area. This starts off minimised and to the right of the encounter deck along with its own discard pile. There are special options available on these decks to move them into the encounter deck (or swap them over).

Game controls (menus and shortcuts)
Hand

  • Double click a card in hand to play it onto the table
  • Right click in the hand area to bring up the menu for other options (Random discard and Mulligan)
  • Press ‘Del’ to discard a card

Player deck

  • Double click your deck or use ctrl+D to draw a card
  • Right click on the deck for further options (Shuffle, Draw Many, Lock Deck)
  • Right click in the discard pile area for further options (Move all to deck, Discard many)

Encounter Deck

  • Double click to move the top card to the staging area
  • Right click in the deck area for further options (Shuffle)
  • Right click in the discard area for further options (Move all to deck, Discard Many)

Table

  • Ctrl+Right Arrow – done (phase mode enabled), indicate you are done in this phase/step. Game will advance to next phase/step when all players are done.
  • Ctrl+Right Arrrow – done (phase mode disabled), send “Done” message to chat window
  • Ctrl+Shift+S – game setup
  • Ctrl+E – reveal the top card of the Encounter deck
  • Ctrl+Shift+E – reveal the top card of the Special Encounter deck
  • Ctrl+H – place the top card of the Encounter deck face down on the table
  • Ctrl+Shift+H – place the top card of the Specail Encounter deck face down on the table
  • Ctrl+Q – reveal next quest card
  • Ctrl+R – refresh all your cards and increased threat by 1 (this is done automatically in phase management mode or by Ctrl+N if you haven’t refreshed this turn)
  • Ctrl+N – next round.
  • Esc – clear any targeting on your cards (arrows or rotating target)
  • Automation – a sub-menu allowing control of the the automation level and turn/phase management
  • Random – a sub-menu allowing players to randomly choose heroes, allies, players or to flip a coin or roll a die

Card

  • Ctrl+S – Add a shadow card (if an enemy) or reveal a shadow card (if face down and rotated)
  • Del – Discard the card
    • Player cards go to owner’s discard pile
    • Encounter cards go the Encounter discard pile
    • Quest cards go to the bottom of the quest deck. If there are then no quest cards in play the next one is automatically drawn and added to the quest area
  • Ctrl+V – add to victory display. The victory display can be viewed in the Global tab along with the current round number
  • Ctrl+F – Flip over the card
  • Ctrl+A – Make active location
  • Ctrl+K – Lock the card – Card will not refresh. If it is a Hero it will not receive a token in the resource phase. If it is the first player token, it will not move on to the next player
  • Double click – Perform default action (Flip, Exhaust, Refresh, Advance quest, Add token depending on card type and state)
  • F1 – Add a resource token
  • F2 – Add a progress token
  • F3 – Add a damage token
  • F4 – Remove a resource token
  • F5 – Remove a progress token
  • F6 – Remove a damage token

  1. Great work on this game but I have a dumb question. When I got to quest card 3B in A Passage Through Mirkwood, it tells me to search the Encounter Deck for a spider card. But there is no Encounter Deck on the board! Am I doing something wrong?

  2. I have been looking and can not find any way of dealing with multiple resource types on a single hero. such as Aragorn and Celebrian’s Stone which gives him spirit and he is leadership.

  3. How do you target? Arrows and rotating target is referenced and escape clears. I cant find how to put them on the table though?

    • Hold down Shift, then click and drag from one card to another to draw an arrow. Shift-clicking on a single card will put down the rotating target. You can either Shift+click on these cards again or hit Esc to clear them.

  4. Hi, great job with everything. I have multiple computers in my house, I have uploaded scanned images to the one, but when I log in on the other the scanned images do not appear. Is there a way to see the scanned images on both computers when I play…or do i have to send the images to the second computer and manualy add them?

    • You will have to manually add the card images to each computer. The card data itself is a network resource, which is synced up every time you boot up OCTGN. This ensures that everyone is playing with compatible cards. The card images, on the other hand, are a local resource — which is why you’d need to install the images on each computer. After all, you aren’t able to see the card images I have on my computer unless you install them on yours, and the same would be the case for your two computers!

    • Two ways:
      1) If the two Quest Stage 3’s are sitting in the Quest Deck (in the Global tab), you can right-click on that quest deck and click Shuffle. Then simply draw the next card.
      2) If both Quest cards are already out on the table, then right-click somewhere on the table, and go to Random -> Coin Flip, or Random -> Number. Either one will help you randomly pick a card. 🙂

  5. “Table->Automation->Help – Turn Sequence” – seems to be missing. I know that there is a “Game Documents->Turn summary” function but still nice turn summary card placeable on the table would be great (at least for new players). Was it removed intentionally?

  7. Good morning, I have the following question: in some cases, quests are telling player to NOT collect resources at the resource phase. Is there a way to lock the resources or the only way is to remove them manually after refresh?
